Building and lab access is a privilege and responsibility that impacts the safety of individuals, labs and research. If given access to the buildings and labs assigned to Materials Science & Engineering (00067) and Metallurgical Engineering (00108) you are agreeing to the following rules —

    • You will not lend your keys or give out access codes to other students, researchers and community members.
    • You will not access buildings and/or labs outside of the guidelines directed by your supervisor/advisor/PI and/or college administrations.
    • You will return building and lab keys to the MSE Administration Office (304 CME) at the end of your employment or tenure as a student/researcher in the department.

Because the two programs are in the process of a merger there may be a few differing policies and procedures because building operations are under different colleges. We understand there might be some confusion so please don’t hesitate to contact Joshua with your questions.

Key Requisition Procedure

  • Please fill out the key request form for physical keys and UCard access. Key pad access is granted by your faculty or lab manager.
  • Pay the $20 deposit here. If you are requesting UCard access but no physical keys — a deposit is not required. Deposits are required before keys will be issued.

Deposits

All students and visitors are required to pay a key deposit prior to gaining access to keyed buildings and labs. This deposit is refundable when ALL issued keys are returned upon graduation or end of need. A new $20 deposit will be required to replace lost keys — the previous deposit will be forfeited to cover the cost of replacement keys.

Please take note that deposits cannot be transferred between people.

Key Pad & UCard Access

For access to labs with key pad or UCard access a key request or deposit is not needed. Please note the different procedures for access to rooms with these two modes of access.

Key Pad Access

    • Key pad access is installed on certain rooms and labs in the HEDCO, MCE, WBB and FASB buildings in place of physical keys. Each key pad has an assigned 4 to 5 digit numerical code that one must have to gain access to the desired room.
    • Access codes for the key pads are kept by the responsible staff, faculty or lab manager. Please see your staff, faculty or lab manager to obtain an access code.
    • A deposit is not required by the Materials Science & Engineering Department to gain access to key pad access codes.

UCard Access

    • UCard access (also known as C-CURE) is installed to gain access to FASB and a number of labs in the FASB and WBB buildings in place of physical keys. Access is granted via an individual’s UCard to specific building and labs during specified hours set by the responsible staff, faculty or lab manager.
    • UCard access is requested via the key request form. Access will be granted by the appropriate manager within 1-2 business days.
    • A deposit is not required by the Materials Science & Engineering Department to gain access to buildings or labs via your UCard.

If you have questions about key pad or UCard access please contact Josh with your questions.
